Instead of the sandbox-style of gameplay with open terrain and random vantage points with unpredictable encounters (though I digress) - alter the nature of the game into a more structured scenario. Perhaps instead of pitting players onto a large playing field, create a structured environment capable of housing 32v32 players.
Kind of like this,
A large building or ship complex with many rooms and corridors. (10-15 rooms) Players advance through corridors much the same as they do on balconies in current maps. These rooms will be where the majority of gunfights occur. Kind of a FPS-Mass Effect environment style, with enough space for around 4 to 8 players to engage. Less emphasis on vehicular combat.
This is what I'd believe to be an ideal set up for space and non-planetary encounters, as well as stronghold and other defensive missions. If the complex is grounded, then the exterior can be set up much like it already is.
Also, I think this can solve the issue for performance problems we're currently having. Instead of having the entire map loaded at once, reduce this to a series of rooms and corridors and only process areas important to player location. This may very well offer supplemental resolve for use of the UE3 engine, however this is my perspective looking in. So I do not know CCP's plan of action with the current build. |

That's... not necessarily what I'm getting at. However in that case, I find that huge sandbox maps are boring and annoying, but that is merely my opinion. As you have yours.
As for what I am trying to say is that providing a variety of environments, as well as setting up an architecture for maps such as these, will provide an appeal to many different types of players. Or at least two, considering I haven't seen any other propositions.
Also, if such a game mode were implemented, this could set the conditions for matches played on maps inside of ships and the like. Sure, I used Mass Effect as a reference, but I feel that would match the theme of an EVE FPS better than aimlessly running around in a dust pit. Or maybe I missed the point here. /sarcasm
Overall this is a pitch to optimize how the game manages its multiplayer resources. |
